A last minute addition to our backyard garden, I planted this heirloom salvia (originating back in 1964 at the San Francisco Botanic Garden), also known as a Cleveland Sage, in a part-sun area as a filler and it has definitely defied expectations...in a good way, exploding in size and filling in a formerly drab, empty area. Drought tolerant and elegant, it reminds me somewhat of the centaurea in its star shape and purplish beauty...and smells spectacular. And in mid-October, isn't it so utterly cool to find things still blooming while so much is preparing to fade and fall as we wind down the season?
