When I was househunting for our downsize back to the city, I noticed there was a sad, tilting ceanothus amongst the shrubs in the back of the house we ultimately bought. It was shaded out over the years due to weed trees in the neighbors yard and desperate to bloom. Over the winter I'd cleaned out our side's shrubs, built a cedar fence over the old chain link, and convinced the landlord next door to remove one of his dead trees. By spring? Voila! The California Lilac was BACK!
