Harvest: Potato - "Peruvian Sunrise", "Huckleberry Gold" & “Kippfler"

Sure I could photograph these all cleaned up but in my opinion there's nothing more real than a handful of taters just pulled out of the garden! This year due to incredibly bad soil I purchased that had no water retention, the potato harvest is a FRACTION of what it should be - very few plants reaching the bloom stage and a surprisingly empty soil where my beds in the past are usually teeming with spuds. What I have been able to get out of here tastes good, of course, but it's not enough to celebrate, not even close.

That being said, we have three organic, scrumptious varieties represented here that I adore and have grown repeatedly over the past 5 or 6 years (and I'm guessing the folks who bought our farm a couple years back are still enjoying some of them since we know that once you have a potato bed? you always have a potato bed.). Oh yeah, and "adore" is a big deal for me to say about potatoes, as I am NOT a big fan of most potatoes (unless they are potato skins loaded with cheese and stuff which don't really count lol...).

  • Huckleberry Gold - While I don't get them for this purpose, these purple-skinned ones are a low-glycemic potato which is a nice bonus. I like 'em because they taste delish.

  • Peruvian Sunrise - There are hundreds of varieites of potatoes and if you only go to the grocery store for your spuds, you are missing out. This South American variety is like buttah.

  • Kippfler (aka Austrian Crescent) - My Aussie husband's favorite potato, the Kippfler, is a fingerling popular in his home country...and took a LOT of research to learn that it's known as Austrian Crescent here in America. It's good stuff.
