Honestly, I did not expect to have this much color in the garden in the second week of November, but due to a fairly mild fall and our first frost date coming and going with no frost yet, we've been enjoying a longer bloom in both our back and front garden.
My favorite by far are the big flushes of red in the garden, from the cape lilies along the path - fully making up for the collapse of the hollyhocks in a very blustery rainstorm a couple weeks ago - to the monstrous pineapple sage plants that are nearly as tall as our young pear tree.
However, the assortment of dahlias I've planted are a close second, continuing their massive presence in several areas of the back garden and really stunning me with their staying power even as the nights get chillier.
While I was far more intentional in getting our gardens designed, I still could not have predicted the amount of color still lighting up our little sanctuary here in the valley as the days get shorter and grayer. Even the calendula gives nice little pops of color in corners I'd forgotten about, along with the valiant efforts of the last rose buds of the year. With the Farmers Almanac predicting extra cold in our Northern area of the state this year, I'm savoring every extra day of pretty that I can!
