Short retaining walls like this aren't nearly as hard as the websites say. When we moved in, ours on one side were not built with treated wood, and literally were disintegrating before our eyes. After much research, I decided to go with my gut and simply bury posts into the ground and connect the horizontal pieces as shown with some hardcore galvanized lag bolts. A year later, they are still kicking arse.
