While sowing onion seeds is the cheapest way to do it, I've found MUCH more reliability in planting onion sets. Ordering long-storage red and yellow onions in packs of 60 sets not only delivered a more voluminous crop, but also removed the need to thin - a project I've always hated in the garden. Back on the farm, we harvested TONS ...so much so that in our last year when we sold the farm, we brought bags of the harvest with us and it lasted through our first winter back in the city!
