Fennel is in bloom ! I absolutely love this plant because it's a) so low maintenance, b) so darn pretty (and tall!), and c) makes a really good number of seeds to harvest at the end of the season. Ironically, I do NOT care for the licorice smell of fennel, but when making sweet Italian pork sausage or sizzling up some of it to go into homemade hoisin, it's irresistible, and so with that, ever since my first house I've always tried to include a plant in the herb garden. It's not a great companion plant for a lot of my raised bed veggies, so I grow it separately in our herb garden where the mason bees have a joyful time digging into it!
NOTE: Be super careful when you're at the nursery picking out fennel if you're not growing it from seed, or you'll do what I accidentally did this spring and buy the bulbing kind that is NOT for seed harvesting!
