Heirloom Harvest: “Costata Romanesco"

A little small? Yep.

A little misshapen? Yep.

A bit of optimism for the zucchini plant? Heck yeah.

This Italian heirloom is a favorite of mine, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it produces in our new digs. I'd planted some baseball versions in other locations but the seeds never arose so thankfully I diversified my squash plantings with various varieties and locations around the property! This heirloom variety only produces about half of a conventional/hybrid variety, but that is fine with me. Fresh is best when it comes to this, and I gave up zucchini bread ages ago...

And speaking of zucchini...a decade or so ago I discovered the magic of zucchini 'noodles' at a vegan place I used to frequent for lunch when I first started my consulting business. It inspired me to buy one of those awkwardly big-but-effective plastic spiralizers for my kitchen. When we sold our last house, I sold it as I told myself I'd find another way, both for a plastic-free option AND because the minimalist in me has never been a fan of single-function items in the kitchen, I was stoked when I was browsing an aisle at a local grocery store and spotted a mason jar spiralizer lid thingamajig with multiple variations in one compact metal setup - compact storage, no plastic, and super afforable. I knew they'd overpriced it at the grocery store, so I went online and found it on Jarware.com. Rad rad rad.
