Harvest: Lettuce - “Italienischer"

This year I've been hell-bent on harvesting in the fall and early winter if possible, and even do a bit of overwintering. You see, every year I say I will and then life gets in the way - or I simply space out and it's too late. So this year I put it on my calendar when to sow - which always feels funny to do in late August, right?

But it's worth it, as our first lettuce, an oak leaf variety I'm trying for the first time called "Italienischer" (yes, it's the German word for Italian) has sprouted and grown to about half it's full size in just 3 weeks. Gotta love it! It's known as both sweet AND slow to bolt, which is awesome considering in our normally-mild Skagit Valley we've got a wee heat wave of two 85F days suddenly in play, ugh...although I still have covered it with a shade cloth just to be safe.
