I couldn't be more excited that our newest huckleberry bush has given us a few handfuls of these beautiful Pacific Northwest natives! While I've always grown the traditional Evergreen Huckleberry procured at native plant sales over the years, they have literally NEVER fruited. Bloomed? Yes. Fruited? Nope. Whether in sun or shade, they've just been, well, a boring shrub...including the one I originally planted in the fall here in the Valley. Nothin', nada.
But this spring I noticed the Thunderbird variety at the local nursery which promised fruit, and decided to try, try again. And even though it was a little bitty thing, right now only about a foot tall/wide....it's producing as we hit late summer/early fall. I love it even more because it's in a spot that starts out in the shade in late fall/winter, gets part shade in the spring & early fall, and full sun in summer...so it's nothing if not adaptable!
These are sweet, tasty, and nothing I care to share with the birds (they can have the leftover elderberries, thankyouverymuch!), they're such a nice little score! Thunderbird, y'all, it's where it's at.
