Harvest: Cherries - “Black Tartarian"

Okay, perhaps "harvest" is not the right word but in its second year, our combo cherry tree has begun to deliver a few cherries! The Black Tartarian, which appears to be the primary cherry variety, is really, really good. We only have about a dozen cherries this first fruiting year, but to see fruit on it is simply a triumph, as anyone with a young fruit tree I know will agree!

Turns out I picked these ones a few days too early (they should be nearly black), but it's still pretty cool. Black Tartarians came from Russia to England in 1794 and used to be called “Ronald’s Large Black Heart.” Us Americans, of course, decided to change the name when it crossed the Pacific a decade or so later. Oy vey! But kind of a cool story of this heirloom breed, worth sharing...
