Grass: "Blaze Bluestem"

One of the hardest things for me in garden landscaping and overall planning has always been figuring out how to integrate perennial grasses into the design, so it's always kind of a crapshoot when I plant a new variety.

This one is SO my new favorite. "Blaze Bluestem" is one that changes over the season, starting out as a fairly simple green ornamental grass over spring and summer, and then slowly bringing in the color as fall arrives, and ultimately will turn to a deep reddish-brown hue in winter. It looks great, particularly as other plants will ultimately shed their leaves, some (like the pineapple sage nearby), nearly disappearing into the ground as the temperatures approach freezing.

Highly, highly recommend. Plus...? It's drought tolerant!
