While I've never had an interest in making my own bar soap, I wanted to find a way some years ago to make a liquid version. With just four ingredients (olive oil, castor oil, honey and castile soap) and a mason jar, turns out it's cheaper, healthier, and utilizes way more sustainable ingredients - and packaging.
I buy our Dr Bronner's castile soap in the biggest container possible - the same ones that they pour from in the refill shops, refill my olive oil bottle at the local co-op along with local honey, and am stoked to have found via Litterless a refill shop that carries castor oil, keeping not only the DIY process but the packaging sustainable.
