Clematis: “Rouge Cardinal"

Oh my, the clematis is blooming - a sure sign of good things, particularly in this late start we've had to summer where we're just starting to reach the low 70s. I love clematis but as my husband and I agreed, it can be hard to pick out one because there are both a million varieties, and a lot of them end up looking almost cartoonish with their color variations, so all too often I walk away. But after years of having purple, this year I chose red, and I'm so happy I did. Not knowing where I wanted to plant it in the actual garden back in the early spring, I ended up putting it in a container and trellising it up on the back patio against a vertical post, and it's doing very well. Got a little waterlogged initially due to drainage but as soon as we fixed that up, it came right back and...voila!

Not bad for a first start out of the gate. And of course now that our garden is in full happy mode, I have a perfect place in the ground to transplant it at the end of the season, where it can quadruple in size...
