Bringing the Garden into Every Room

So many times we pick flowers and just pop them on the mantle...and forget there are so many other lovely ways to display the beautiful things we grow in the garden. Along with that, we often think we need to have an elaborate vase in order to showcase it, when there are some amazing options often right in our kitchen. Finally, we don't always realize when a plant falls over and/or needs to be cut back, this can be the perfect 'fodder' for a vase.

Here are a few things we're doing lately to embrace the abundance in our garden while using what we have to display them...

In our primary suite's bathroom, I had trimmed back a section of the MASSIVE Hidcote lavender bush...and my husband promptly saw its potential and popped it in an old bourbon bottle we'd kept because of its cool shape, and created a tall bit o' gorgeous in there.

The Chicago Peace roses continue to explode on the bush and the scent is mesmerizing, so why not pop it on one of our shelves in the kitchen where we can smell it while kneading bread dough or prepping veggies? A pint jar does the honors here, with the flowers cut short to emphasize their sheer volume, not to mention focus on the pretty rather than a long sexy stemmed rose which would seem possibly a wee bit out of place where we're baking :)

And finally, rescuing a huge armful of dark purple Bachelor's Buttons that collapsed in a recent summer rainstorm (they were staked but bent off above where it was tied to it) and re-homing it into a quart Mason jar has brought a little elegance to our rustic dining table.

Along with this, we also have little vases outside (not shown here, but you can see them in the landscape design pictures if you pay close attention!), using repurposed bottles that other food has come in, from the short and squatty balsamic vinegar bottle to the old standby, half-pint canning jars. So much more fun than fancy expensive vases...and way better for the planet...
