Ever since growing these in my first front garden and watching the hummingbirds go berzerk over them, I've been hooked on bee balm.
My mother taught me decades ago about how hummingbirds are territorial, and a great way to keep larger birds away from your blueberries and other small fruits is to simply plant more hummingbird-friendly plants like this one! Couldn't be more true!
I have planted six or seven bee balm varieties thus far around our front, back and side gardens, as they work in a variety of environments. Wet feet? They can take it! This one here is on the side garden I created along the driveway, adjacent to our property line with the nextdoor neighbor, and is thriving in the lower slope where the soil stays wet for far longer than most plants can take. They don't mind dappled sun, so I've got them near our fruit trees, and they are a great perennial border plant, so I've put them near our backyard garden path. Lots of options, and this classic Jacob Cline is a stunner.
