Our little Anna's Hummingbird visiting the bee balm we planted just for her. Hummingbirds are very territorial, and will do all kinds of crazy swoops through the air to keep other hummingbirds out of gardens they deem as 'theirs'. The bee balm, cardinal flower, valerian, and hyssop are big favorites thus far, and as our gladiolus are just starting to bloom, late July will be even more of a nectar smorgasbord for them!
By the way, I just learned that the males have pink heads and the females are more of the brownish-green. Ours is a girl!
Hot Tip: I learned years and years ago to plant hummingbird-friendly flowers next to your berry bushes that you are worried about being ravaged by larger birds. Hummingbirds can't eat the berries themselves but will work like crazy to keep the larger birds off their turf. I've never had the need to cover up my blueberries or currants because of this. Built-in blueberry security matched with really cool native hummingbirds? Works for me.
